Position: Exhibitions Coordinator
Classification: Part-Time Ongoing Employee Position
Compensation: Hourly wage $20/hour, max 35 hours per month (about 8 hours/week)

About AAWAA

The mission of the Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA) is to advance the visibility and recognition of Asian American women in the arts. Through exhibitions, publications, public programs and an informative website, AAWAA is an accessible resource and portal for educators, academics, researchers, arts and social justice communities and the general public.

Based in San Francisco, AAWAA has consistently promoted both local and national efforts to achieve its mission, defining and redefining the contributions of Asian American women artists since its founding in 1989 by noted regional artists Betty Kano and Flo Oy Wong along with Mills College professor Moira Roth and artist Bernice Bing. Established as a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 2007, AAWAA has evolved from a close-knit community organization into a respected producer of consistent high-quality multidisciplinary art exhibitions, community art projects, publications, and programming reaching diverse local and national audiences.

About the Position

The Exhibitions Coordinator oversees the coordination of all aspects of AAWAA exhibitions from engaging and communicating all artist, contractor and venue logistics in accordance with AAWAA’s mission, values and vision. This position works in a collaborative team environment with AAWAA’s Programs & Communications Manager and curators. We are seeking an individual who is interested in uplifting the work of Asian American women artists and has an avid interest in community building and exhibition planning.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Assists the lead curator in achieving the vision for each exhibition as relevant to AAWAA’s mission

  • Engages artists in the community to attract and broaden submissions from a vast multidisciplinary, multi-ethnic and intergenerational audience

  • Provides input in creating budget and production plans and supports in soliciting funding partnerships with AAWAA staff  

  • Acts as the primary liaison between AAWAA staff, artist, curator and gallery

  • Coordinates signing contracts/agreements, communications and scheduling of artists, contractors, partners and gallery

  • Sets and coordinates exhibition hours, timeline of install, de-install and public programs (in coordination with Programs & Communications Manager)

  • Organize and create promotional materials in coordination with the Programs & Communications Manager and Publicist to implement marketing and publicity schedule

  • Supports AAWAA staff in drafting grant and fundraising narratives related to exhibitions

  • Performs other duties specific to exhibition projects as needed

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Preferred candidate would have 2+ years experience in arts administration, programming, event management, and/or nonprofit organizations.

  • Experience with Asian American organizations and/or community arts highly desired

  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations and a commitment to racial and cultural equity

  • Proficiency with online productivity and task management tools (i.e. Google Drive, AirTable, etc.).

  • Expertise with computer programs such as Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.

  • Flexibility in schedule as required - including weekends/evenings - for programs and events

  • Fundraising or grant writing experience is a plus, but not required
